About

A resident-led resource for safer everyday trips.

Bike Walk New Providence is a resident-led effort to make walking, biking, and e-biking safer, more enjoyable, and more practical in New Providence, New Jersey.

Our focus is everyday local travel: getting to school, downtown, parks, the library, transit, recreation facilities, friends' houses, and nearby businesses. These are the kinds of short trips that can help a town feel more connected, independent, healthy, and vibrant.

We're neighbors, parents, scout leaders, small business owners, commuters, NJ Transit riders, runners, walkers, and everyday residents who care deeply about how people move through New Providence. Many of us have experienced firsthand both the joy of being able to walk or bike somewhere nearby — and the stress of routes that don't feel safe enough for ourselves or our kids.

New Providence has many of the ingredients of a bike- and walk-friendly town. It is compact, relatively flat, and built around close neighborhood destinations. But too often, families hesitate because routes don't feel safe enough. Crossings can be stressful. Sidewalks are often non-existent. Drivers may not expect children on bikes. Bike infrastructure can feel limited or disconnected.

This site collects local observations, practical ideas, route concerns, survey findings, examples from other communities, and ways for residents to support safer streets.

What we are — and what we're not

  • • Practical and constructive, not adversarial.
  • • Focused on everyday short trips, not long-distance recreation.
  • • Pro-options, not anti-car.
